RLE (Refractive Lens Exchange)

Not a candidate for LASIK?

RLE (Refractive Lens Exchange) may be the right option for you to improve your vision.

What is RLE?

RLE is a vision correction surgery. It involves the removal of the clear lens of your eye, replacing it with an intraocular lens implant (IOL) to restore vision and reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses.

RLE is recommended for patients who are better candidates for lens-based surgery (i.e. RLE) than for to cornea-based laser vision correction (i.e. LASIK or PRK). We offer all refractive error correction offers—and we’re the only facility in Newfoundland and Labrador offering this treatment.

Benefits of RLE

RLE can help you see better and get rid of reading glasses. It can correct retina disorders, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, lens problems, astigmatism and presbyopia.

At LENS & LASIK, we offer laser-assisted RLE surgery with the Catalys Precision Laser — the most technologically advanced surgical option, resulting in a safer, gentler, and more precise procedure. It provides greater customization and offers imaging in real-time to enhance the accuracy of the procedure. Plus, incisions are blade-free, which reduces the risk of infection and enhances vision.

What happens during RLE surgery?

During RLE surgery, we keep you informed and comfortable every step of the way.

During your pre-surgery appointment, you’ll meet the team, complete diagnostics, and determine which option is best for you. We’ll walk you through the different surgery options, provide financing information and answer any questions you have.

On the day of surgery, you’ll be at the clinic for a few hours total. First, you’ll meet with a staff member to discuss the process and get comfortable.

During surgery, a few small incisions are made with the laser to access the lens. Then, the lens is delicately removed and replaced with a new Advanced Technology Intraocular Lens (ATIOL), so you can see clearly.
