In a groundbreaking moment for healthcare in Newfoundland and Labrador, Dr. Nour Nofal, an ophthalmologist and cornea specialist at Jackman Eye Institute, has successfully completed the first cornea transplant surgeries in the province in decades.
On April 21, 2025, Dr. Nofal performed four life-changing transplants in a single day, marking a significant milestone in improving access to specialized eye care in the region.
A Long-Awaited Advancement in Local Eye Care
For years, patients in Newfoundland and Labrador who required corneal transplants had to leave the province for this specialized procedure.
“We see offering this surgery as a major step in expanding access to critical eye care services in Newfoundland and Labrador, and providing Newfoundlanders and Labradorians with a chance at restored vision and a better quality of life,” said Dr. Jackman. “We are so pleased and proud to offer this and are looking forward to welcoming patients in the coming months.”
Now, thanks to Dr. Nofal’s expertise, this sight-restoring surgery is available right here at home, eliminating the need for costly out-of-province travel for the procedure.
“We are thrilled to be bringing this life-changing procedure back to our province,” said Dr. Christopher Jackman, owner and director of Jackman Eye Institute. “The need for corneal transplantation in our country is on the rise across Canada, and by Dr. Nofal offering this service, we are providing a much-needed solution to patients who would have had to travel in the past to avail of this surgery.”

This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the support and collaboration of many individuals and organizations.
Special thanks go to the Health Sciences Centre’s leadership, including Dr. Bussey, Chief of Ophthalmology, and Dr. Kindrachuk. The exceptional nursing staff in the operating room, the Toronto Eye Bank, and TB Clift Limited, who provided the specialized surgical instruments, all played vital roles in making these surgeries a reality.
